About Unnatural Act

Unnatural Act band in a castleUnnatural Act is an exciting cover band out of northern Illinois servicing the Midwest with our relevant interpretations of some of rock’s greatest songs. Somewhat of a “supergroup," Unnatural Act consists of Russ Katzenmaier (The Desotos, Atomic Zombies, Last Judgement), Michael Poulsen (Risk Factor, I.V.Q., Last Judgement), Phil Kwiek (Listen, Systems Rebourne, Last Judgement), Dave Saam (British Steel, N.I.L.8), and Annie B. (Shut Up Marie and a solo career). Unnatural Act’s mission since we formed in 2006 has been to bring a premium brand of rock and roll to every venue, and to show every person present an Unnaturally good time.

Unnatural Act brings an eccentric set list from the past several decades that spans all genres. We manage to take the songs that have made their way into our preverbial D.N.A. and bring them to the masses in one lump sum. Our stage show combines the frills and excitement of an arena band with the classic shtick of Vaudeville of old. We may wear short sleeves, but we have tricks up them! As we are always full of surprises, it’s not unusual to see “special guests” performing with us.

Only our professionalism can top our performances. Unnatural Act is always on time (if not early), never ends up a drunken idiocy (in other words, we bring no “issues”), and we always deliver the goods!

Unnatural Act has been playing venues throughout northern Illinois and Chicago at private events and clubs such as The Rock House, Austin's Fuel Room, Blarney's Island, Flatlander’s, and many more. Individually the members of this band have played all over the country in many major venues. Mike (who’s played the organ since age 3 and the bass since 5) has played the Chicago Polish Festival in front of thousands. Russ (whose obsession with guitar started at the age of 6) has opened for Less Than Jake and Agent Orange. Phil, along with Russ and Mike, played the Gateway Theater, the Thirsty Whale, and the Vic Theater in the band Last Judgement. Dave has played for over ten years in different clubs throughout Illinois and Wisconsin and has been honing the craft of drumming for over 30 years! Annie has been on and off tour traveling the country with her solo project. Her last band, Shut Up Marie, dominated the local L.A. scene from 1999 to 2005. The combination of experience, diversity of influence (everything from 80’s pop, arena rock, country, prog rock, metal, punk, blues and more) mixes together to produce… an Unnatural Act!

Unnatural Act has just one goal, to provide a good time for all - at any occasion. We are the premier band to play at a club, private party, corporate event, laundromat grand opening, festival, opening for a national act, or fair. Once booked, we can guarantee an Unnaturally good time!
